Strength Training is not just about lifting weights. Recruiting the right tye of muscle fibres is important. The strength trainer physique has a different look to that of a body builder although the both lift weights. The body builder generaly looks like he has bigger muscles, but is actually weaker than the strenght trainer.
To get stronger, you will need to build muscle.
To gain more muscle your will need to:
Do resistance training (weight lifting),
Eat the corrct food,
and Rest.
Sounds pretty simple, well not so fast.
Lets tackle the training first, there are many more factors to consider such as:
Getting the intensity level right,
The rep range,
Set range,
Correct technique,
Rest intervals
Muscle balance.....
Muscle balance always amuses me, in the gym you will notice those people that focus solely on their chest and biceps. What about the legs and the other 8 muscle groups, not only do these people look ammusing, they are at serious risk of injury as their bodies are so out of balance.
Ego training is also worth a mention here, the guys lifting as much weight as possible, using terrible technique and putting themselves at risk of injury.
If you get the repetition range wrong, you will look more like a body builder and not acquire the strength you want.
You will also need advise on how to get your nutrition right. If you are going to get strong, you will need to eat correctly.
